I recently bought two of these Coleman Max 2 Person Backpacking Tents for my family online from a certain large big box retailer (Walmart). I must admit that I was quite shocked at the excellent value this tent represents for the extremely reasonable and very customer friendly price of $70 for this tent. The tent's dimensions are: (6.6' long x 4.6' wide -- with a center height of 43"). According to the Coleman Company, the tent has a pack weight of 4lbs. 10 oz. The tent has aluminum poles, aluminum stakes, a nylon taffeta floor and polyester taffeta fly/walls, one door, one vestibule, two fly vents, and an included mesh gear loft. The tent is freestanding, lightweight, and compacts into a very reasonable size for backpacking.In terms of comparison, I also have a Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent and a Slumberjack Trail Tent 2 which are both in the similar price range as the Coleman Max 2 Tent. The Coleman Max 2 Tent (although quite smaller than the Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent and slightly smaller than the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2) is much lighter and of higher quality than these other two tents (particularly the Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent). The Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent and the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2 both have heavier and cheaper fiberglass poles, unlike the Coleman Max 2 Tent with its quality aluminum poles. The Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent and the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2 both come with heavy, cheap steel stakes. The Coleman Max 2 Tent comes with lightweight, sturdy aluminum stakes. The Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent comes with a heavy, cheap polyethylene floor; whereas the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2 has a lightweight, good quality polyester floor and the better Coleman Max 2 Tent has a lightweight, very nice quality nylon taffeta floor. The Coleman Max 2 Tent and the Slumberjack Trail Tent are both freestanding, whereas the Coleman Hooligan 2 tent is not. The Coleman Max 2 Tent comes with an overhead mesh gear loft that is very useful. Neither the Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent or the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2 offer this handy loft feature. The Coleman Max 2 Tent (like the Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent and the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2) has a nice, practical vestibule. Unfortunately, Coleman does not offer for sale custom fitted tent footprints to protect the floors of either their Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent or (more importantly) their Coleman Max 2 Tent. Slumberjack wisely does offer for sale a custom fitted tent footprint to protect the floor of their Slumberjack Trail Tent 2.In conclusion, I will repeat that the Coleman Max 2 Tent is a nice, small, lightweight backpacking tent. For a backpacking tent in this price range category ($70 at Walmart.com), it has surprisingly high quality components. I truly do not believe that it is possible to find another backpacking tent (new) with such similar quality components being offered in the same or less "customer friendly" price range. The only specific flaw regarding this tent is that it is really too small and thus not practical/comfortable for taller folks. The tent's current length of only 6.6' prevents me recommending this tent to anyone over 6' in height. Coleman would be well advised to consider increasing the length of this tent to at least 7' in order to attract the large number of potential customers who are over 6' in height. A final recommendation for potential customers regarding this tent would be the use of some sort of ground cloth to protect the tent's nice nylon taffeta floor from dirt, damage, and moisture. Unfortunately, Coleman does not (but should) offer for sale their OWN custom fitted tent footprint for this tent. It is a shame that Coleman does not seem to realize that there is a profit to be made by creating protective tent footprints for their tents (especially this tent with its nice nylon taffeta floor). Hopefully, Coleman will someday wisely decide to offer a custom fitted tent footprint for their Coleman Max 2 tent. In the meantime, I recommend the purchase of the Slumberjack Trail Tent 2 footprint (available from Amazon) as it fits the Coleman Max 2 Tent as the two tents are quite similar in size. By "forcing" me to purchase the Slumberjack tent footprint, Coleman has missed out on a sale they could have had if they had offered their own tent footprints. Oh well, Coleman's loss is Slumberjack's gain...

Got this tent today, set it up on the porch and gave it a once over. Made in Bangledesh, and appeared to be manuf. correctly, all parts were there and in good condition. Assembles easy enough, and plenty of room for one and gear, as long as your not over 5'10" imo. Fitting 2 people in there is possible I suppose, but no way youre getting all your gear in there as well, maybe in the vestuble area though. Went over the seams with sealant and sprayed first coat of waterproofing spray (better safe than sorry). Best part of the tent is its light weight and small storage on back for hiking and such. Great for stargazing as mesh roof and sides offer 360degree view of sky. Be gentle with her if you get her, as the cheaper tents usually hold up worse to rough abuse. Cant wait to go camping!

I absolutely love my Coleman tent. I just returned from a small section hike on the Appalachian Trail with mine and it did really well. For someone taller, maybe not a good choice, but I'm short, so it's like heaven. Plenty of space for me to set my sleeping pad and bag in along with my backpack, with room to spare. Might be tight for 2 adults, but for the size and weight, I recommend it. Pack sniffers scoff and say eww it's a Coleman, but hey, it stood up just as well for me as the ones that are over $200. Easy to setup, simple design, lightweight for a 2 person. Mesh netting definitely keeps the bugs out. I was writing my journal entry one night via headlamp and the bugs definitely were trying to get in. So many bugs it sounded like rain on the tent. Absolutely no bugs got in. That impressed me. Perhaps Coleman can make it a few ounces lighter if they ditched the pole sleeves at the top and replaced them with the fast clips they have on the rest of it. I did seam seal and waterproof spray mine out of the box just as a precaution having had other tents leak before that were supposedly waterproofed at the factory. Have had this in thunderstorms and downpours with no water problems, tho it does get some condensation on the inside of the rainfly in wetter and more humid conditions. Definitely a good beginner or on a tight budget tent to get you on the trails. Happy hiking!!
